Hiking from the Interlaken Area
There are literally countless hiking trails all around Interlaken. Any direction you head, you’ll find beautiful walks ranging from short buggy friendly strolls between the lakes to quite intense hikes on the surrounding mountains.
Lake to lake
Lake Brienz and Lake Thun are connected by the Aare, an emerald blue river. It’s a lovely walk, easy and stroller friendly.
Schynige Platte
The train ride up is a treat in its own right. There are multiple hiking trails up there and they are all well marked. I would suggest the Panorama trail with a 20min. ascent to the Oberberghorn which offers splendid views. It is possible to hike all the way to Grindelwald along the ridge. Make sure you don’t miss the last cable car or train down, it could be hard on the knees.
Harder Kulm
The Harder Kulm is Interlaken’s “Hausberg”, literally translated – home mountain. If you look at the triangular rock face near the top, you may be able to detect a man’s face. The story goes that a monk followed a young local girl who jumped off the cliffs to escape him. As a punishment he was turned to stone.
A funicular takes you up to the top and it’s a few hundred metres to the beautiful restaurant and viewing platform. You’ll enjoy views of both lakes and the entire Jungfrau mountain panorama. There are numerous hiking trails, some which go all the way to Brienz. They are all well marked. The Interlaken tourism office has a good brochure with many hikes and trails. Click here
